Lakers Compete in Michigan State's Spartan Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University men's and women's cross country teams took part in the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. on Friday, Sept. 13. 

The women's competition opened at 11:00 a.m. with the 6,000-meter distance. Seven Laker females participated in the event with senior Rebecca Lathrop finishing first among her teammates. Lathrop crossed with a time of 25:38.3. Junior Alexis Passino followed with a time of 27:07.6 in the 6,000-meter distance. Fellow junior Emily Merten was the next Laker to complete the distance with a time of 27:37.2. The remaining Laker athletes in the race were sophomore Leah Bell (27:56.8), freshman Abigail Kline (30:04.0), senior Melody Perrin (31:20.3) and sophomore Caitlyn Schumann (31:36.1). 

The men's 8-000-meter race followed with an 11:30 a.m. start time. Junior David Mitter led the Lakers as the team's first finisher with a time of 26:47.0. Mitter finished 80th overall out of 326 athletes. Junior Kendal Delpiere was the next Laker to complete the distance, registering a time of 28:41.6. Rounding out the Lakers finishers were junior Peter Shambaugh (29:42.8), freshman Daniel Anderson (31:40.8) and freshman Kevin Garland (33:16.7). 

Up Next:

The Lakers will head to Detroit, Mich. for the Second Annual Warrior Challenge hosted by Wayne State University next Saturday, Sept. 21. The women's race is set for 10:30 a.m. with the men's race following with a 11:15 a.m. start time.
