HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Hillsdale College Invitational on Saturday, where both teams captured second-place finishes.

In the men's 8,000-meter race, David Mitter placed second overall and secured the fastest time for the Lakers with 26:54.1. Garrett Smith had the next-best time of 27:56.0, placing him fifth, while Jack Miles' time of 28:39.6 secured his sixth-place finish. Peter Shambaugh finished eighth with a time of 29:10.8. Zachary Workman finished with a time of 30:39.9, placing him 14th overall.

In the women's 5,000-meter race, Lake Superior State was led by Alexis Passino's time of 21:33.4 which placed her 11th. Lydia Heimonen had the next-best time for the Lakers, finishing 12th with a 21:45.4 finish time. Rebecca Lathrop's finish time of 21:46.5 placed her 13th overall, while Leah Bell finished in 22:18.4, placing her 15th.

The Lakers performed well despite a rough course due to thunderstorms, which initially delayed the race. They'll return to Hillsdale on Nov. 17 to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regionals.

"We competed well on a course that threw a lot of variability at us today. We will be back there in six weeks to turn some heads," said assistant coach Danielle Filipek. "Our onward focus from every moment of the season has gone to conference and regionals, so I'm excited we had some weather challenges."

Lake State heads to Detroit to participate in the Wayne State Invitational on Oct. 20.
