Laker Volleyball Falls to GVSU in Straight Sets

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (7-20, 4-12 GLIAC) fell to the Grand Valley State (GVSU) Lakers (22-3, 14-2 GLIAC) in straight sets on Sunday.

Grand Valley was able to take an early 7-4 lead but back-to-back kills from Emilee McDaniel helped propel LSSU on a 6-1 run to take the lead. However, GVSU was able to settle down, and despite kills from Valeriya Varnakova (Ufa, Russia) and Maggie Morris (Schoolcraft, Mich.), Grand Valley claimed the opening set 25-16.

GVSU jumped out to a five point lead in the second set, but LSSU tied the score at 12-12 after a 5-0 run that featured an ace from Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.). Both teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the set with a kill from Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) had her team within two, but Grand Valley would ultimately steal the set by a score of 25-20.

Lake State jumped out to a 5-2 lead with a kill from true freshman Rachel Steele (Eaton Rapids, Mich.), but GVSU responded with runs of 3-0 and 5-0 to take the lead. LSSU was able to keep the set close with kills from Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.) and Velasque, and a service ace from Morris had her team only trailing by one late in the set. However, Grand Valley was able to close out the set and the match with a 4-1 scoring spurt by respective scores of 25-21 and 3-0.

McDaniel led the way offensively with 10 kills while also being involved in five blocks defensively, and Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.) led all players with 24 assists.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Nov. 10 when they host the Northern Michigan Wildcats with the first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
