Laker Volleyball Falls to the Rangers on the Road 3-1

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (6-16, 3-8 GLIAC) fell on the road to the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside (13-9, 7-4 GLIAC) by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday.

The Rangers were able to come away with the early advantage in the match, but a pair of kills from Hannah Callaway (Portage, Mich.) helped keep the Lakers within three. LSSU would then keep fighting with a 7-2 run as a kill from Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) gave her team the lead. However, the Rangers would ultimately steal the set by a slim margin of 25-23.

The Lakers would jump out ahead with a 7-0 run behind multiple kills from Velasque early in the second set. They would then keep pushing with back-to-back kills from Callaway to take a seven-point lead. Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.) would then notch back-to-back kills of her own before Callaway ended the set at 25-21, tying the match at 1-1.

The Rangers were able to press ahead in the third set, and despite a late 6-1 rally from the Lakers, Parkside managed to claim the set to go back up 2-1.

In the fourth set, the Rangers would again take the early lead, but the Lakers responded with a 6-0 scoring run that was capped off with a kill from true freshman Morgan Deming (Boyne City, Mich.). However, Wisconsin-Parkside was able to pull back ahead and take the set to secure the overall win in the match by a final score of 3-1.

Despite the loss, Velasque led the way offensively with 15 kills, and Kalinowski ended the day with 37 assists. Meanwhile, Sydney Briney (St. Joseph, Mich.) led the Lakers in digs with 10.

The Lakers return to action on Monday, Oct. 23 when they travel to take on the Ferris State Bulldogs with the first serve scheduled for 12 p.m.
