LSSU Volleyball Falls at GVSU in Battle of Lakers

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (6-15, 3-7 GLIAC) fell to  the Grand Valley State (GVSU) Lakers (17-2, 9-1) by a final score of 3-0 on Friday.

LSSU claimed a slim lead early in the match with a kill from true freshman Rachel Steele (Eaton Rapids, Mich.), but GVSU was able to pull ahead. Multiple kills from Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Emilee McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) helped their team rally to stay within striking distance, but despite another late 5-1 push that featured a pair of kills from Maggie Morris (Schoolcraft, Mich.), Grand Valley would ultimately take the opening set by a score of 25-18.

GVSU pulled ahead early in the second set. LSSU kept fighting with kills from McDaniel and Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.). However, despite kills from Morris and Hannah Callaway (Portage, Mich.), Grand Valley was able to claim the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Grand Valley claimed the early lead in the third set, but LSSU fought back with a 5-1 run that featured a service ace, a solo block, and a kill from Velasque. Lake State would keep chipping away with back-to-back service aces from Jordyn Haller (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), and a solo block from McDaniel had her team back within three. However, despite an ace from Kalinowski, Grand Valley was able to take the set and the match by respective scores of 25-10 and 3-0.

Lake Superior State will be looking to bounce back when they travel to Kenosha, Wis. to take on the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday, Oct. 21 with the first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.
