Laker Volleyball Falls to No. 21 Bulldogs

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (3-12, 2-5 GLIAC) fell to the No. 21 ranked Ferris State Bulldogs (12-3, 7-0 GLIAC) in straight sets on Sunday.

Both teams battled early on in the opening set on their way to a tied score of 6-6, but a kill and a service ace from Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) gave her team a four-point lead, forcing a Bulldog timeout. Ferris State would rally back to take the lead, but the Lakers would go on a 5-1 scoring run of their own to take a 21-20 lead after aces from Velasque and Emily Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.). However, the Bulldogs would settle down after a timeout to score the next five points, taking the opening set by a score of 25-21.

The Bulldogs claimed the early advantage in the second set, but kills from Hannah Callaway (Portage, Mich.) and Emilee McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.) cut the lead down to two. However, despite kills from Kalinowski and true freshman Morgan Deming (Eaton Rapids, Mich.), the Bulldogs would ultimately close out the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Kills from Deming and Velasque gave the Lakers an early 7-6 lead in the third set. The Bulldogs would respond with an 8-1 scoring run, but the Lakers would not go down so easily, using runs of 4-1 and 3-0 to get back to within two. However, despite strong blocks by freshmen Deming and Shea Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.), Ferris State was able to close out the third set by a score of 25-21.

McDaniel led her team in kills with eight on an efficient mark of .467, and Kalinowski notched 21 assists while also scoring kills on five of her six attacks for a hitting percentage of .833. Meanwhile, libero Ally Lasley (Birch Run, Mich.) led all players in digs with 13.

The Lakers will look to bounce back on Friday, Oct. 6 when they host Wayne State with the first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
