Laker Volleyball Falls in Final Match of the 2021 Season

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team fell in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to the Northwood University Timberwolves on Saturday, Nov. 13 by a final score of 3-0. With a loss in their final match of the regular season, the Lakers finished the 2021 schedule with a 2-13 mark in conference play after dropping the match by scores of 26-24, 25-19, and 25-19. 

The opening set was highly competitive between the two GLIAC opponents. The Lakers and Timberwolves played evenly throughout the opening points of the set with the Lakers holding an early 7-5 lead. After Northwood would tie the set and build a two point lead (9-7), the teams would exchange points to eventually sit tied at 13-13. The set continued to stay close as the score was tied at 19, 21, and 22. With the game tied at 24, the Timberwolves sealed the first set win with consecutive points to win by a score of 26-24.

The second set picked up where the first set left off as the even play between the pair of teams continued. The score was tied through the first 18 points of the set and with Ally Gruber serving for the Lakers, the team built a 12-9 lead. Gruber recorded back-to-back aces in the stretch. The set was tied at 19 before the Timberwolves went on a six point run for a 25-19 victory. 

In the third and final set of the match, the Lakers built a 7-4 lead with kills from seniors Bethany Wilson and Camdyn Odykirk. Later in the set, freshman Ally Lasley served consecutive aces as the Lakers extended their lead to four points (11-7). Senior Kyra Vezina added an ace of her own later in the set to keep the Lakers ahead (15-11). Northwood would register four straight points to tie the set at 15. The Lakers regained the lead (16-15) but the Timberwolves scored seven of the next eight points to go up 22-17 in the set. Northwood would close out the set by a final score of 25-19 to clinch the three-set win over the Lakers.

Stat Leaders: Senior Bethany Wilson led the team in kills with nine on 22 attempts to post a .273 hitting percentage against the Timberwolves. Senior Camdyn Odykirk followed with eight kills on 18 attempts to rank second behind her classmate in the final game of their collegiate careers. Freshman Maggie Morris and Gruber rounded out the top three kill leaders in the match with six each. Morris recorded a team-high .364 kill percentage in the match. Senior Halle Grulke registered all 30 assists for the Lakers in the match.
