Volleyball Drops Road Match to Michigan Tech in Conference Match

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 6 by a final score of 3-0. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 2-12 in conference play after losing the match by scores of 25-10, 25-10, and 25-13. 

In the opening set, the Huskies took a 4-0 lead over the Lakers to begin play. As the set went on, the Lakers trailed 8-4 as junior Ally Gruber recorded a pair of kills for the team. Lake State kept the set within four points (11-7) as senior Camdyn Odykirk added a kill and sophomore libero Emily Hagelthorn served an ace. Michigan Tech responded with a run of five straight points to go up 16-7 and led by ten points (20-10) later in the set. The Huskies scored the final six points (25-10) of the first set to lead 1-0 in the match. 

Through the first 13 points, the Lakers trailed the Huskies by one point (7-6) as senior Halle Grulke recorded an ace. Michigan Tech would not let the Lakers even the score and responded with a run of 12 points to pull ahead 19-6. The set ended with the Huskies winning by a score of 25-10. 

In the third and final set of the match, the home team led 7-3 through the first 10 points played. The Huskies offense continued to extend their lead, and led by 10 points (16-6) later in the set. Lake Superior State tried to string together a late rally, scoring five of the final nine points in the set but fell by a final score of 25-13.

Stat Leaders: Junior Ally Gruber led the team in the match with five kills. Sophomore Emilee McDaniel led the team with a .500 hitting percentage against the Huskies. Senior setter Halle Grulke led the team in assists with 14 in the match while sophomore libero Emily Hagelthorn led the team in digs with eight.

The Lakers will play their final match of the 2021 fall season next Saturday, Nov. 13 on the road at Northwood University. The match against the Timberwolves is set for a 2:00 p.m. start in Midland, Mich.
