PREVIEW: Laker Volleyball Set for Pair of GLIAC Matches against Wisconsin Parkside and Purdue Northwest

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.- The Lake Superior State University volleyball team will conclude their 5 match home stint with a pair of matches this weekend. They will face GLIAC opponents; Wisconsin Parkside on Friday, October 9th at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, October 10th, the Lakers will face Purdue Northwest at 2:00 p.m. Both matches will take place in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

 

Last weekend, the LaKers fell three sets to none in their matchup against fellow GLIAC member Northwood. LSSU would show some grit, especially in the deciding third set where the Lakers would fall 25-23. On the weekend, the Lakers would be led in kills by Taylor Fleming who would record 4 kills. Sophomore libero Emily Hagelthorn would continue her impressive defensive performance this season by recording an additional 5 digs.

Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers, Kenosha, Wis.

The Rangers currently boast a record of 4-10 (1-4 GLIAC) coming into the weekend matchup against the Lakers. Led offensively this season in kills by Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Pappas and defensively in digs by Junior Kaylee Kuecker, the Rangers will come to Sault Ste. Marie on a 4 game losing streak. Parkside is coached by Leigh Barea, who enters her fourth season as the coach of the Rangers this year.

Purdue Northwest Pride, Hammond, Ind.

The Pride will face the Lakers on a 7 game losing streak. Currently, 1-12 (0-5), Purdue Northwest sits at the bottom of the GLIAC south division standings. Strong performers for the Pride this year have been Freshman Riley Kraiza who leads her squad in kills with 101 on the year. Summer Clark and Sammie Abruzzo both work well on defense with both 104 and 102 digs respectively. The Pride are coached by Bill Schepel who is in his inaugural season in the position.

Following the matches this weekend, the Lakers will be back on the road for the first time in three weeks. The Lakers will compete in the Midwest Regional Crossover tournament hosted by Purdue Northwest in Hammond, Ind. The competition will take place on both Friday, Oct. 15 and Saturday, Oct. 16. The times and opponents for the Lakers are still to be determined for this competition.
