Volleyball Gears Up for Final Weekend of the Season

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Superior State volleyball team will conclude their regular season on the weekend of Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16 as they host their Upper Peninsula rivals; Michigan Tech Huskies, and Northern Michigan Wildcats. The game against Michigan Tech will take place on Friday, Nov. 15 at 4:00pm while the game against Northern Michigan will be at 1:00pm on Saturday, Nov. 16. Both games will be in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Senior day will be after the game on Saturday, Nov. 16. 

2019 Lakers 

As this regular season winds to a close, the Lakers sport an 8-17 record. As part of that record, the Lakers are 2-12 in the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), which is good enough for 11th place in the GLIAC. 

Leading the Lakers this season offensively is Senior outside hitter Amanda Reid, who has a total of 256 kills on the season. Sophomore setter Halle Grulke leads the Lakers with 585 assists which averages out to 8.24 assists per set. Defensively, sophomore libero Abby Beachnau leads her team in digs at 351 on the season. Senior Caitlyn Kane leads the Lakers in blocks. 

#20 Michigan Tech Huskies- (20-5), (12-2 GLIAC)

The Huskies are ranked 20th overall in NCAA Division II. The last time the Lakers faced the Huskies, the Huskies won in three competitive sets. The Huskies are led by Olivia Ghormley who has been named the GLIAC North division player of the week four out of ten weeks this season. The Huskies are coached by the seven year veteran Matt Jennings. 

Northern Michigan Wildcats- (11-14), (7-7 GLIAC)

The Wildcats are currently tied for sixth place in the GLIAC. In their last meeting, the Lakers were victorious in four sets. The Lakers will look to get another win over the Wildcats on Saturday. The Wildcats are led by Sarah Kuhen and Lizzy Stark who have been a dangerous duo this season. The Wildcats are coached by Mike Lozier who is in his third season at the position. 

Honoring Seniors

Directly following the game against Northern Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 16, there will be a brief ceremony to honor the two seniors from Lake Superior State for all of their accomplishments. The Lakers who will be honored are #5 Caitlyn Kane and #11 Amanda Reid

#5 Caitlyn Kane- Middle Blocker- Laingsburg, Mich.- Criminal Justice Major

Kane has played in 269 sets in her career as a Laker. The Laingsburg native has 315.5 points to her name and also helps lead her team in blocks. Over her time at Lake State, Kane has amassed 123 block attempts and has 235 kills. Both of Kane's parents are alumni of Lake State. 

#11 Amanda Reid- Outside Hitter- Norco, Cali.- Criminal Justice Major

During her time at Lake State, Reid has played in 363 sets. Reid has consistently led her team offensively. Ried has 933 kills over her career as well as 1019 digs. Reid also had earned 1074.5 points over her career as a Laker. Reid once had 30 kills in a match against UMary, a feat that was a career high for her.

Nov. 15 -LAKERS vs Michigan Technological University- 4:00pm

Nov. 16 - LAKERS vs Northern Michigan University-  1:00pm

Conclusion

The 2019 Volleyball season will conclude by honoring the Lake State seniors directly following the game against Northern Michigan on Nov. 16.
