Volleyball to Host a Pair of Weekend Conference Matches

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -  The Lake Superior State volleyball team will be back in action this weekend as the Lakers will host their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponents, the Grand Valley State Lakers and the Davenport Panthers. The game against Grand Valley will be on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6:30pm and the game against Davenport will start at 2:00pm on Saturday, Oct. 26. Both games will be in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. 

Review

After their recent success at the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind., the Lakers are riding a four-game win streak, a feat that hasn't been done in over nine seasons. The Lakers were led offensively by senior outside hitter Amanda Reid who led the Lakers in kills as she notched 45 during the weekend. Sophomore Camdyn Odykirk also had a strong weekend, contributing 23 kills during the tournament. Sophomore setter Halle Grulke had an impressive 79 assists in the three games. Freshman setter Emily Kalinowski also recorded 26 assists in the match against Alderson Broaddus, a team high for the weekend. Defensively, the Lakers were solid and were led by sophomore libero Abby Beachnau, who had 53 digs on the weekend. 

Back to GLIAC Opponents

This weekend, the Lakers will host teams that have identical records (9-11, 4-5). The GVSU Lakers went 1-3 at the Midwest Crossover including a very close match against #10 Lewis University.  Like Lake State, the Panthers also won the three games that they participated in during the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament. 

LSSU Leaders to Watch

Senior Amanda Reid has been providing consistent offense and defense for her team this year. She leads her team in kills (210) and is second on her team in service aces (20) as well as having 189 digs, enough to claim second on the year for her squad. Sophomore Halle Grulke leads her team with 475 assists on the year, averaging 8.48 assists per set. Defensively, the Lakers are led by sophomore libero Abby Beachnau who leads the team in digs at 278. 

Grand Valley State University Lakers 

Ali Thompson has led her team in kills this year, recording a season-high 225 kills. With 9.41 assists per set this season (667 this season), Rachel Jacquay has been setting her team up to score this season. Kendel Yerkes, the libero for the GVSU Lakers, leads her team with 305 on the season. 

Davenport University Panthers   

Davenport is led on offense by sophomore outside hitter Hayley Krieger who leads her team with 229 kills on the year. Senior Sami White leads the Panthers in assists this season with 519. On the defensive side of the net, libero Nina Ruditsky leads the Panthers with 274 digs this season, while Megan Herr tops the team with 45 blocks this year.

Up Next

After the pair of matches this weekend, the Lakers will travel to continue GLIAC play against the Northwood Timberwolves in Midland, Mich. on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. The Lakers will also travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to compete against #18 Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3:00 p.m.
