Lake State Volleyball Set for Midwest Region Crossover Tournament

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Superior State University volleyball team will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to participate in the 12th Annual Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament this weekend. In this tournament, the Lakers will be among participants from their own conference, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), as well as the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC). The Lakers will face the the Maryville Saints on Friday, Oct. 18 at 11:00 a.m., the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1:00 pm and the Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 4:00 pm. All games this weekend will be played at the Academy Volleyball Club in Indianapolis.

About The Tournament

The tournament, which has been running for 12 years, consists of over 41 teams from three different conferences. Being the nation's largest volleyball tournament, the Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover Tournament has become one of the most anticipated events in Division II women's volleyball. 

Lake Superior State- GLIAC #11 seed

The Lakers sport a 5-12 record which includes a 2-7 record in conference play. Following a win during Great Lake State Weekend last Saturday, the Lakers have now matched last year's win total in both overall and conference play. Senior outside hitter Amanda Reid has been the Lakers leader offensively with an impressive 165 kills on the season, averaging 3.06 kills per set. Sophomore setter Halle Grulke has complied 396 assists this season which is ninth among all GLIAC players while her 8.25 assists per set is good for 10th in the GLIAC.  On the defensive end of things, sophomore libero Abby Beachnau ranks in seventh in the conference in digs with 225 and digs per set with 4.17.

Maryville Saints- GLVC #16 seed

Hailing from St. Louis, Mo., the Saints possess a 4-15 overall record and have gone 0-7 in GLVC play. The Saints have recorded 87 service aces on the season with the help of freshman Adriann Welte who leads her teammates with 18 this fall. Senior Cassidy Arndt leads her team with 207 kills on the year. Defensively, the Saints have been led by sophomore libero A.J. Halleman who has led her team with 240 digs, thus far. 

Ohio Dominican Panthers- GMAC #10 seed

Out of Columbus, Ohio, the Panthers are 2-16 on the season with their only two wins in conference play (2-4). Freshman setter Carleigh Dietsh has been supporting her teammates offensively with 378 assists on the season. On defense, the Panthers are led by senior Allie Rutter who has 245 digs. Panther's head coach Jennifer Fepke is in her fourth year leading the Panther program.

Alderson Broaddus Battlers- GMAC #13 seed

Located in Philippi, W. Va., the Battlers have posted an 8-12 overall record on the year which includes an 0-5 record in GMAC play. Outside hitter Ashlyn McDonald leads her squad with 233 kills on the season. Battlers freshman setter Camile Ashby leads her team in assists at 355. Defensively, the Battlers are led by defensive specialist Anna Schmidt who has 233 digs through 20 games.

Following this tournament, the Lakers will return to Bud Cooper Gymnasium to continue GLIAC competition against the Grand Valley State Lakers on Friday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. followed by a match against the Davenport Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2:00 p.m.
