Lakers Fall in Hard-Fought Match Against Saginaw Valley

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University women's volleyball team fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Saginaw Valley State University in three sets on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. With the conference loss, the Lakers overall record drops to 1-4 in GLIAC play and 4-9 overall.

 

First Set: The Lakers got a great start during the first set as the team held an 8-2 advantage through the first ten points of play. Lake State's early play was highlighted by a kill from junior Sarah Bailey. Saginaw Valley would eventually erase the Lakers lead as the teams were tied at 19 points apiece. The Cardinals would grab the lead late in the first set (24-23), before eventually clinching the opening set by a score of 25-23. 

Second Set: Lake State and Saginaw Valley continued where they left off as the contest was evenly matched through the first half of the set with the Cardinals ahead 12-11. The score remained tight through most of the set but the Cardinals would edge the Lakers once again as the set ended 25-22. 

Third Set: The Cardinals capped off their comeback by clinching the third set, and the match, with a score of 25-16. Saginaw record improves to 3-2 in GLIAC play with the win. 

The Lakers offensive was driven by the trio of Bailey (12 kills), senior Amanda Reid (9 kills) and sophomore Camdyn Okykirk (8 kills). Bailey also led the team with a .296 hitting percentage. 

Sophomore setter Halle Grulke's 29 assists in the match was the most among both teams in the match. 

Defensively, the Lakers were led by the duo of Abby Beachnau and Amanda Reid who had 16 and 12 digs in the match, respectively. The pair also led the team in receptions with Reid receiving 19 times and Beachnau 16.

The Lakers will play a pair of road games as they head to Ashland, Ohio to take on the Ashland University Eagles on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. followed up by a trip to Detroit, Mich. to play Wayne State University on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2:00 p.m.
