Lakers Fall to No. 10 Ferris State in Home Opener

SAULT STE. MARE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team started off Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with a loss to No. 10 ranked Ferris State in the Lakers first regular season home game of the 2019 season on Friday, Sept. 20 at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lakers record stands at 3-6 overall, 0-1 GLIAC through the first nine games of the season.

Lake Superior State dropped the match to the Bulldogs in three sets with scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-20. 

The first set was won by Ferris State by a score of 25-15. Senior Amanda Reid, junior Sarah Bailey and sophomore Bethany Wilson each recorded two kills for the Lakers. Sophomore Halle Grulke notched six assists while sophomore Abby Beachnau's nine digs was the most among either team in the set. 

The Lakers lost the second set to the Bulldogs (25-13). In the third set, the Lakers stayed right with the Bulldogs as they held an 11-7 lead through the opening stretch of play. Ferris State would go on a seven-point run to retake the lead before ultimately winning the set 25-20. 

Reid finished the game with six kills, the most among the Lakers, while also ranking second on the team in digs with 14. Beachnau led Lake State with 16 digs in the match. In the third set, Lake Superior State had strong performances from freshman setter Emily Kalinowski, who recorded four assists and seven digs, and redshirt freshman Nina White who had two solid kills for the Lakers. 

The Lakers will return to the court tomorrow afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. match against GLIAC opponent Northwood in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
