Despite Comeback, Lakers Fall to Alma in Exhibition Match

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's volleyball team was defeated by Alma College in an exhibition game on Tuesday night at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers forced a decisive fifth set after losing the first two sets against the Scots but were defeated by a score of 15-11 in the final set.

The Lakers fell behind early as they dropped the first two sets by scores of 16-25 and 23-25. LSSU edged Alma in the third set (28-26) and then forced a decisive fifth set after clinching the fourth set by a score of 25-16. 

In the final set, the two teams traded points early on but Alma took the match by winning the set 15-11. 

The Lakers were led by senior outside hitter Amanda Reid, who totaled 15 kills. Sophomore Camdyn Odykirk was the only other Laker with double-digit kills (10). 

Odykirk recorded a team-high hitting percentage of .333. Senior Caitlyn Kane's .200 hitting percentage was good for second on the Lakers.

Freshman libero Sydney Briney registered 21 digs to lead the Lakers defensively.

Freshman Emily Kalinowski's led the team with 32 assists and ranked second on the team with 15 digs. 

The Scots were led by Sara Majerle, who had 25 kills and a hitting percentage of .297, as well as Haley Novak who recorded 28 assists. 

Lake State's .073 hitting percentage in the game trailed Alma's .150 hitting percentage. 

The Lakers will open their season as they travel to Houghton, Mich. for the Michigan Tech Tournament this Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7. LSSU will play Southwest Minnesota State (11 a.m.) and Upper Iowa (3 p.m.) on Friday. The tournament will close with games against Mary (9 a.m.) and Minnesota-Crookston (1 p.m.) on Saturday.
