LSSU Volleyball Falls to Northwood in Five Sets

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Lake Superior State volleyball team took on Northwood in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Friday evening. The battle went down to the wire with the Timberwolves picking up the victory in five sets.

Northwood took the first set 25-18 and the Lakers battled back to pick up a win in set two, 25-17, followed by another win in the third set by a 25-23 score to pick up a 3-1 lead. Northwood bounced back with a 25-21 win in the fourth set and secured the match win after taking the fifth set 16-14.

The Lakers fall to 5-20 overall with a 2-12 record against GLIAC opponents. Northwood is now 10-15 and 4-9 within the conference.

Freshman Kelly Walter led the Lakers in kills with 18. Junior Amanda Reid was second with 12. Walter also notched a .359 hitting percentage.

Defensively, senior Paige Gotham led the way with 17 digs. Reid and senior Mikala Williams both had 13.

Freshman Halle Grulke led in assists with 18, and senior Lauren Lukasik had 16.

For Northwood, Mackenzie Kepler and Grace Rekeweg both had the team-high of 18 kills. Brenna Murphy led the Timberwolves' defense with 23 digs.

Lake State had a .128 hitting percentage, while Northwood's was .207.

The Lakers return to the court Saturday at 2 p.m. against Ferris State.
