Lakers Host Pair of GLIAC Opponents

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Lake Superior State volleyball team returns to home court this weekend, hosting a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents.

The Lakers face Northwood on Friday (6:30 p.m.) and then will play Ferris State on Saturday (2 p.m.).

The Lakers are 5-19 overall, with a 2-11 record against GLIAC opponents. Northwood is 9-15 overall and 3-9 within the conference, while Ferris State is 19-4, 12-0.

Last Time Out:

LSSU's most recent action was last weekend when the team faced Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan on the road. They fell to Michigan Tech 3-0 on Friday night and took Northern Michigan to five sets on Saturday, but ultimately fell 3-2.

By The Numbers:

Junior Amanda Reid leads the Lakers offense with 278 kills (2.93/set) and ranks 10th in the GLIAC in kills. Freshmen Kelly Walter and Camdyn Odykirk are second and third, with Walter tallying 161 and Odykirk notching 124.

Senior Paige Gotham has 407 digs (4.28/set) to lead the defense and is seventh in the GLIAC. With 317, Reid has the next-highest total, followed by senior Mikala Williams' 289.

In assists, senior setter Lauren Lukasik has accumulated a team-high of 392. Freshman Halle Grulke has 295.

As a team, the Lakers have a hitting percentage of .098 and have tallied 926 kills. With a digs total of 1550, LSSU ranks fourth in the conference.

Scouting the Timberwolves:

Northwood took on Ferris State last Saturday (Oct. 20) and dropped the road match 3-0. The Timberwolves went on to face Alma in a non-conference match on Oct. 24, winning 3-0.

Northwood has a team hitting percentage of .133 and has tallied 934 digs this season. Mackenzie Kepler leads Northwood in kills with 204 (2.52/set). For Northwood's defense, Brenna Murphy leads in digs with 335 (3.99/set), ranking her tenth in the GLIAC.

Scouting the Bulldogs:

Ferris State's last action was on Oct. 20 against Northwood, where they picked up a 3-0 win on home court. They travel to face Saginaw Valley on Friday, Oct. 26 prior to visiting the Lakers.

The Bulldogs are third in the GLIAC with a team hitting percentage of .231 and are fourth in digs with 1175. Allyson Cappel leads the Bulldogs offense with 292 kills and 3.32 kills per set, ranking her fifth in the GLIAC. In digs, Katie Placek leads the way with her total of 432 and a 4.91 average per set, tabbing her at second in the conference.

The Lakers continue home action the following weekend with the final home match of the season against Saginaw Valley on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. during Great Lake State Weekend.
