LSSU Volleyball Drops Five Setter to Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State volleyball team fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Northern Michigan University in a five set battle on Saturday.

The Wildcats picked up a win in the first set 25-15, and the Lakers retaliated with a 25-23 victory in the second set. Northern Michigan took the third set 25-17 to regain the lead. LSSU evened things up once again by picking up a 25-21 win in the fourth set, but Northern Michigan prevailed in the fifth set with a 15-5 win to take the match 3-2.

The Lakers are now 5-19 overall and 2-11 within the GLIAC, while Northern Michigan is 15-9 and 4-9 in conference matches.

Junior Amanda Reid notched the team high in kills with 12. Tied for second were freshmen Kelly Walter, Camdyn Odykirk and Bethany Wilson, all with seven. Odykirk and Wilson also had the top hitting percentages with .467 and .273, respectively.

Senior setter Lauren Lukasik led LSSU in assists with 19. Freshman Halle Grulke was next with 12.

Defensively, senior libero Paige Gotham led the way with 27 digs. Reid accumulated the next-best of 17.

For the Wildcats, Autumn Monsma led the offense with 18 kills and also tallied the team high in digs with 28.

The Lakers had a hitting percentage of .079 and Northern Michigan's was .202.

Home action for Lake State volleyball continues next weekend, Oct. 26-27, against Northwood on Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Ferris State on Saturday (2 p.m.).

The Lakers wrap up the 2018 home schedule the following weekend with a conference match against Saginaw Valley on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. during Great Lake State Weekend.
