Lakers Defeat Ursuline in Five Sets

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Lake Superior State volleyball team took on Ursuline College in the 2018 Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Lakers won in a tight five set battle.

The Lakers dropped the first set 16-25 but bounced back to take the second set 26-24. Ursuline followed it up with another set win by a 19-25 score, and Lake State evened things up once again by winning the fourth set 25-22. The Lakers captured the win with a 15-7 victory in set five.

With the win, LSSU's record is now 4-16 overall and 2-9 against conference opponents. Ursuline is now 8-10 and 4-7 against GMAC conference mates.

Freshman Kelly Walter led the team in kills with 17, followed by senior Morgan Kelly tallying 16. Walter also notched a .371 hitting percentage.

In assists, senior Lauren Lukasik notched 34 and freshman Halle Grulke had 14.

Senior Paige Gotham totaled the team-high in digs with 27 while Mikala Williams had 20.

For Ursuline, Victoria Henderson led the offense with 23 kills and Kassidy Stilwell had 22 digs.

Lake State's hitting percentage was .216 and Ursuline finished with .244.

The Lakers return to the court next tomorrow (Oct. 13), continuing play in the Midwest Region Crossover. They take on Trevecca Nazarene at 10 a.m. and Ohio Valley at 4 p.m.

They return home Oct. 26-27 to host Northwood on Friday (6:30 p.m.) and Northern Michigan on Saturday (2 p.m.).
