LSSU Volleyball Begins Road Trip at Saginaw Valley

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—The Lake Superior State volleyball team will travel to Saginaw Valley Tuesday evening (7 p.m.) as it takes on the Cardinals in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

The Lakers enter the contest with a 1-9 record overall and an 0-2 mark in the league. SVSU is 7-3, 1-1.

Last Time Out:
Lake State opened its conference slate with a pair of home losses to Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech over the weekend.

On Friday, the Lakers dropped a five-set battle (2-3) to the, then No.23-ranked, Wildcats before being swept (0-3) by the Huskies on Saturday.

By The Numbers:
Junior outside hitter Amanda Reid leads the Laker attack with 103 kills (2.58/set) this season and is No.3 in attack percentage at .120.

Freshman middle blocker Kelly Walter is second on the team with 62 kills on the year and leads the team with a .198 hitting percentage.

Defensively, senior libero Paige Gotham leads the team and ranks No.7 in the GLIAC with 158 digs this season. Reid is second with 130 digs while senior Mikala Williams has posted 113.

At the setter position, senior Lauren Lukasik leads the team in assists with 138. Freshman Halle Grulke trails close behind with 133.

As a team, the Lakers are hitting at a.088 clip with 378 total kills thus far.  LSSU ranks No.5 in the league in total digs (643).

Scouting the Cardinals:
Last weekend, SVSU split at two-gamed home stand falling to Michigan Tech in straight sets on Friday before upsetting No.23 Northern Michigan on Saturday.

The Cardinals enter as the No.3 team in the GLIAC in both total kills (527) and assists (492)

Emily Friesl leads the Saginaw Valley attack with 126 kills and ranks No.4 in the conference with a.317 hitting percentage.

Up Next:
After Tuesday's match, the Lakers will continue their road trip with traveling to Wayne State on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Ashland on Saturday (2 p.m.).

Lake State return to Bud Cooper Gymnasium Sept.28-29 as they host Purdue-Northwest (6:30 p.m.) and Wisconsin-Parkside (2 p.m.)
