LSSU Volleyball Set for Wildcat Open

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—The Lake Superior State volleyball team will travel to Marquette, Mich., this weekend (Aug 31- Sept.1) to take part in the Wildcat Open hosted by Northern Michigan.

The Lakers (0-4), who are in search of their first win of the 2018 season, are slated for a pair of non-conference matches on Friday beginning with Minnesota-Crookston (1-3) at 9 a.m. and St. Cloud State (1-1) at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, LSSU closes out the tournament with double-header action against No.1-ranked Minnesota-Duluth at 11 a.m. followed by Bemidji State (3-1) at 5 p.m.

Last Time Out:
In their first action of the 2018 season last weekend at the Ferris State Volleyball Invitational, the Lakers suffered a pair of three-set sweeps to Upper Iowa and Mercyhurst while also dropping two five-set battles with Rollins and Clarion.

Laker Leaders:
Offensively, LSSU has been paced by junior outside hitter Amanda Reid, who posted a team-high 41 kills last weekend. Freshman middle blocker Kelly Walter is second on the team with 32 kills and leads the team with a .219 hitting percentage to start her collegiate career.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior libero Paige Gotham has brought up a total of 69 digs to lead the team thus far. Fellow senior Mikala Williams trails close behind with 64.

At the setter position, freshman Halle Grulke has made an immediate impact in facilitating the LSSU attack in her first four games in the blue and gold as she leads the team with 93 assists. Senior Lauren Lukasik is second with 23.
