LSSU Volleyball Drops Opening Matches at FSU Invitational

BIG RAPIDS, Mich.—The Lake Superior State volleyball team dropped its opening games of the 2018 season Friday falling to Upper Iowa in straight sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-13) and Rollins in five sets (25-7, 17-25, 25-22, 15-13) in non-conference action at the Ferris State Volleyball Invitational.

Game 1:
Junior outside hitter Amanda Reid led Lake State offensively in game one with 13 kills in the match. Freshman middle blocker Kelly Walter was second with six kills and led the team with a .263 hitting percentage.

On defense, senior Mikala Williams paced the team in digs bringing up a total of 14 in the match. Paige Gotham finished with 13.

Freshman Halle Grulke LSSU with 18 assists from the setter position. Lauren Lukasik finished with eight.

Haley Weepie and Lauren Wombles led the Peacocks offensively with eight kills respectively. Malissa LeClaire posted 16 digs to lead the team defensively.

Lake Superior finished the match with a .056 hitting percentage compared to the .227 percentage by Upper Iowa.

Game 2:
In game two, Reid again paved the way offensively registering 14 kills. Junior middle blocker Caitlyn Kane finished with 11 kills to go along with a team-high .348 hitting percentage.

Gotham led LSSU on defense with 27 digs while Williams posted 21. Grulke led the team with 21 assists.

Rachel Fletcher led the Tars offense with 10 kills. Jessika Linnemeyer led the team with 28 digs.

The Lakers finished the match with a .112 hitting percentage. Rollins finished with a .092 percentage.

LSSU will finish off the tournament tomorrow as they square off with Mercyhurst at 11:30 a.m. followed by Clarion at 2 p.m.
