Volleyball drops to Wayne State in straight sets

DETROIT – The Lake Superior State volleyball team suffered a defeat at the hands of the Wayne State Warriors in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday, October 21st.  The Lakers (3-17, 1-10 GLIAC) fell to the Warriors (13-9, 8-3 GLIAC) in straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-15).

In the first set, the Warriors jumped out to a 13-4 lead.  While the Lakers managed to get points off of a Caitlyn Kane service ace and kills by Elizabeth Ballor and Jen Marren, the lead established early by Wayne State proved too much for Lake Superior to overcome, as the Warriors marched on to a 25-14 victory in set number one.

Set number two started off more evenly paced, as the teams traded points back and forth.  After Lake Superior earned a point on an attack error, however, Wanye State rattled off the next seven points, putting the set out of reach at 23-13.  Although the Lakers managed to get a couple of points back, a kill by the Warriors' Michelle Asiedu earned Wayne State's 25th point of the set, and the set victory.

Unfortunately for Lake Superior, the third set turned out much like the first, as the Warriors built a 15-5 lead on the Lakers, including a six points scoring run.  The Lakers battled back, as kills from Amanda Reid helped to close the gap down to 19-11.  Wayne State scored the next four points, only to have the Lakers respond with the next three.  As it did in the first set, however, the early lead gave the Warriors a sizable enough cushion to work with, as they won the third set by the same 25-15 score that they won the second set by.

Statistically, the Lakers were led by Reid with 7 points.  Paige Gotham had 17 digs, while Ballor had 5 blocks.

Wayne State was led by Asiedu and Holly Richardson with 10.5 points each.  Richardson also had 11 digs.  Natalie Breault had 35 assists.  As a team, the Warriors sported a .304 kill percentage.

Lake Superior is back home for the final three games of the season starting on Friday, October 27th against Northern Michigan.  The Wildcats (15-6, 7-3 GLIAC) are coming in from a matchup against Davenport.  First serve is at 7 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.  Tickets may be purchased at the Norris Center Ticket Office or at lssulakers.com/tickets
