Lakers cap Crossover with 3-2 victory over Malone

AURORA, Ill. - Lake Superior State women's volleyball finished the Midwest Region Crossover event with a 3-2 victory over Malone on Saturday (Oct. 15) in their only match of the day. Malone, formerly a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member, now plays out of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Lakers (2-18, 0-9 GLIAC) stormed back from a 25-23 defeat in the opening set to claim the second set 25-21. The Pioneers (4-19, 1-4 G-MAC) took a 2-1 lead in sets with a 25-15 victory in the third set, but again the Lakers responded and tied the match at 2-2 with a tight 25-23 fourth set victory.

LSSU used 11 kills in the fifth and final set to claim the 17-15 victory and cap the weekend with the match win.

Junior Brooke Williams led the Lakers with 16 kills and was followed by freshman Amanda Reid also reaching double-digit kills with 11. The Lakers totaled 59 kills and produced a .267 attack percentage.

Madison Castle and Lauren Lukasik tied for a team-high 23 assists for the Lakers.

The Pioneers scored 65 kills and had a .297 attack percentage on the match. Mallory Adams led Malone with a match-high 18 kills, followed by Haley Kool and Veronica Gehring each adding 17 kills.

The Lakers return home next weekend for a Friday evening match against Walsh at 7 p.m. and a Saturday tilt with NCAA Division III member Finlandia at 2 p.m.
