Lakers drop mid-week match against Saginaw Valley 3-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.- Lake Superior State volleyball was unable to find their offensive footing Tuesday evening (Sep. 27) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on the road against Saginaw Valley State, falling 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-18) in straight sets.

The Lakers (1-12, 0-5 GLIAC) were held to a -.o17 kill-percentage, combining for 22 kills and committing 24 errors on 116 attacks. The Cardinals (6-7, 2-3 GLIAC) also blocked combined for eight blocks and totaled 36 kills with just 13 errors on 93 attempts (.247).

Sophomore transfer Morgan Kelley and junior transfer Karlee Weissend tied for a team-high to lead the Lakers with seven kills. Weissend, a middle blocker, also racked up the only solo block for the Lakers and assisted on four other blocks to total 10 points. Kelley assisted on a pair of blocks to finish with eight total points.

Junior libero Justice Kjolhede led the Lakers with 15 digs and also had a team-high two service aces.

Setters Madison Castle and Lauren Lukasik finished with 11 and nine assists, respectively.

SVSU was led by Tamara Heller's 10 kills and Kelly Vellucci's 32 assists. Heller also tied Kjolhede's match-high two service aces.

LSSU returns home to Bud Cooper Gymnasium to face Ashland this Friday at 7 p.m. and Tiffin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Friday is Superhero Night and fans are encouraged to dress like their favorite superhero at the match with the Eagles. Active and retired military personnel, and first responders will be the Lakers' special guests at Saturday's match against the Dragons.

Full-time and part-time employees affiliated with all local fire, law enforcement, U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs, as well as area Coast Guard, National Guard, reserves, recruiters and veterans will receive a free ticket to the match against Tiffin. Proper identification is requested.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 17-and-under. Groups of 10 or more will receive a 20 percent discount.
