Volleyball closes weekend homestand with loss to NMU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Lake Superior State volleyball fell 3-0 against Upper Peninsula and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals Northern Michigan on Saturday. The match was the second and final match of the home-opening weekend for the Lakers (1-9, 0-2 GLIAC).

The Wildcats (7-4, 2-0 GLIAC) used a .228 attack percentage with 40 kills on 92 attacks and 19 errors to claim the victory in straight sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-20).

LSSU produced just a .079 attack percentage and only 25 kills as the Wildcat defense recorded 37 digs and seven blocks. The Lakers defense produced 29 digs and four blocks.

Marta Fraga Guntin led the Wildcats with a match-high nine kills and also produced nine digs on the back end to lead the NMU defense as well. Autumn Monsma contributed seven digs, a solo block and a block assist for the Wildcat defense.

The Lakers were led by Morgan Kelley, Elizabeth Ballor and Brooke Williams, all contributing five kills. Libero Justice Kjolhede contributed 10 digs and posted two assists and a service ace.

The Lakers struggled returning the Wildcats serves, allowing 10 service aces. The Lakers also committed five service errors.

LSSU travels to Findlay at 7 p.m. on Friday, before closing next weekend with a 4 p.m. match at Wayne State on Saturday. The Lakers return home on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. against Ashland and will host Tiffin on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
