Lakers drop match at Northwood 3-0

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State fell to Northwood 3-0 on Tuesday during a mid week Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. The Lakers (0-21, 0-14 GLIAC) kept the second set close, falling 28-26, but were outmatched by the Timberwolves during the first and third sets.

The Timberwolves (11-14, 7-7 GLIAC) controlled the first set and cruised to a 25-15 victory. The Lakers committed eight errors in the opening frame and were only able to produce six kills.

Both teams scored 14 kills in the middle frame, yet errors continued to haunt the Lakers as they were tagged with eight in the second set. The Lakers held a 21-16 lead late in the second set before five errors doomed the visitors and the Timberwolves rallied to a two-point victory in the extra action.

Janelle Nagy led the Lakers with six kills and also produced 16 assists. Nagy also contributed five digs and helped on a pair of block-assists.

Brooke Williams, Jena Tulgestke, Jen Marren and Sydne McMullen each produced five kills each. Williams also scored a solo block and three block-assists. McMullen was credited with four block-assists.

The Lakers travel to face the No. 5-ranked Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday before wrapping up their week-long road trip with a match against Grand Valley State on Saturday. The Lakers close out the season with a pair of home matches against Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech on Nov. 13-14 respectively.
