Lakers fall in three sets to the Panthers

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State fell to Ohio Dominican 3-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference volleyball match on Saturday.

The Lakers showed a spark of energy in the first set as they hung with the Panthers (9-9, 4-5 GLIAC) before eventually losing the first set 25-21. The Panthers collected 15 kills and six errors while the Lakers tallied 13 kills and seven errors.

Jena Tulgestke and Jenna Kilmer each attempted 10 attacks in the first set, with each picking up four kills to lead the team in the opening frame. Tulgestke finished the match with a team-high seven kills on 21 attacks, good for a .286 attacks percentage. Kilmer finished with five kills on 20 attempts and committed four errors (.050%).

The Panthers were led by Jackie Oestreich's six kills in the first set. Oestreich tied for her team's highest kill total of nine with Tory Thompson.

The Lakers were unable to keep the next two sets close, falling 25-13 and 25-17.

Janelle Nagy contributed an impressive all-around performance for the Lakers once again. The junior from Carleton, Mich. produced 11 assists, 12 digs and six kills.

Justice Kjolhede collected a team-high 12 digs for the Lakers as the team's libero. Kjolhede also produced three assists and collected a service ace.

The Lakers will travel to Aurora, Ill. next weekend to take part in the GLIAC vs. Great Lakes Valley Conference Crossover Tournament. The Lakers will play three matches against GLVC opponents over the course of the two-day tournament on Oct. 16-17.
