Lakers fall in straight sets to the Chargers, 3-0

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State volleyball hosted Hillsdale College in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday at Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers (0-9, 0-5 GLIAC) fell to the Chargers (10-1, 4-0 GLIAC) in three-straight sets.

The Chargers won the first two sets in dominating fashion, winning 25-12 and 25-6.  The Lakers held a 23-18 lead and even held as high as a seven-point lead at times in the third set, however the Lakers let the lead slip and the Chargers rallied to win 26-24.

The Lakers' play in the third set was impressive against the more experienced Chargers due to the absence of a key player. Captain Janelle Nagy was forced to exit the match due to injury with the Lakers holding a 12-11 lead in the final frame.

Nagy was putting together another all-around effort before a lower-body injury ended her day. Nagy left with four kills on eight attempts. The junior setter/opposite hitter also produced four assists, four digs, and two service-aces.

Sophomore Brooke Williams led the Lakers in kills with five. Williams also collected a block-assist.

Senior Sydne McMullen had solid performance at the middle blocker position. McMullen garnered a pair of solo-blocks and also helped on a block-assist.

The Chargers were led in kills by Emily Wolfert with 11. Haylee Booms also produced eight kills on only 11 attacks.

Marissa Owen led the Chargers with 25 assists, while Taylor Bennett also tallied six assists.

The Lakers hit the road next weekend with matches against Ashland and Lake Erie on Oct. 2-3 respectively. The Lakers will return home Oct. 9-10 to face Tiffin and Ohio Dominican.
