MARQUETTE, Mich.- Lake Superior State began its 42nd volleyball season in school history with a non-conference loss at Northern Michigan Thursday, during the opening match of the Wildcat Open. The Lakers, under first year head coach Mallory Larranaga, were overpowered by the Wildcats and lost in straight sets 3-0.

Junior setter Janelle Nagy led the way for the Lakers with six kills and a .556 attack percentage. Nagy also tallied six assists in the match.

The lone senior for the Lakers, Sydne McMullen, chipped in five assists and totaled five kills with a  .400 attack percentage. McMullen also recorded one of the Lakers' two solo blocks in the match.

The Lakers held an early 12-10 lead in the first set before a seven point run opened the door for the Wildcats to take the set 25-17. The Wildcats controlled the second set, winning 25-11 after jumping out to a 14-6 start.  The young Lakers fought tough in the early parts of the third set but fell 25-16.

The Lakers and Wildcats opened the six-team non-conference tournament Thursday with the only match of the evening. Five matches are slated for Friday beginning at 11 a.m, and six matches will conclude the events on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

The Lakers will play Upper Iowa on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Lakers face Michigan Tech at 11 a.m. before playing Cedarville at 3 p.m.
