Volleyball team concludes season

UNIVERSITY CENTER - Lake Superior State concluded the 2009 volleyball season with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-12 loss to Saginaw Valley State on Friday at SVSU.
Nikki Stratelak totaled four kills, and Jeanna Radzinski, Sara Hess and Abby Shereda had three each as LSSU finished 3-24 overall and 2-14 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Janelle Balkwill contributed 14 assists, and Brittany Newberry had 13 digs.
Jessica Treiber had 12 kills to lead SVSU (19-8 overall, 12-4 GLIAC).
Hess totaled a team-leading 209 kills in 2009 and finished her career ranked 10th on LSSU's career kills list with 801. She also finished with 234 career blocks. Senior outside hitter Jessica Ewer was second on the team in digs with 248 and moved up to second on LSSU's career digs list with 1,307. She was a libero during her first two collegiate seasons. This year she was second on the team in kills with 160, and led the Lakers in aces with 19, service percentage at .981 and service reception percentage at .949.
Newberry, a sophomore libero, totaled 528 digs, which ranks fourth on LSSU's single-season list. She leads the GLIAC in average digs per game at 5.80 (overall) and 5.60 (GLIAC opponents).
