LSSU pulls out five-set battle

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State volleyball team improved to 2-0 on its home court after beating Tiffin in a five-set battle on Saturday.
The Lakers (3-6 overall, 2-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) allowed Tiffin to come back and tie the match, 2-2, but dominated the final set, 15-4. They claimed a 25-22, 25-19, 7-25, 15-25, 15-4 decision during their first five-set battle of the season.
After struggling during Sets 3 and 4, LSSU cruised through Set 5, getting three kills from Ali Jones, and two each from Abby Shereda and Sara Hess. Samantha Gibbs contributed one kill, one solo block and one block assist. The Lakers totaled 10 kills and no attack errors during the match-deciding set.
For the match, Hess and Jones led LSSU in kills with 11 each, and Shereda had nine. Hess had an attack percentage of .300. Ashley Purvis totaled five kills and 31 assists. Brittany Newberry led in digs with 19, and Jones and Jessica Ewer had 10 each. Jones also totaled three aces and 15 service points.
The Lakers continue their homestand at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, against Ferris State.
Tiffin (8-6 overall, 0-5 GLIAC), a first-year member of the GLIAC, was led by Brittany Teaford with 13 kills.
