South Dakota, Bemidji State beat LSSU


CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team lost three-set decisions to South Dakota and Bemidji State on Saturday to finish 1-3 at the season-opening Minnesota-Crookston Tournament.

South Dakota (6-0) is a provisional Division I school that is 4-0 against Division I opponents. The Lakers had several solid rallies against both opponents, but fell 25-15, 25-15, 25-13 to South Dakota and 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 to Bemidji State (4-4).

Abby Shereda led LSSU with five kills and Jessica Ewer totaled eight digs against South Dakota. Ali Jones totaled 12 kills and 13.5 service points, and had an impressive .214 attack percentage against Bemidji State. Ashley Purvis contributed 20 assists and three service aces, and Brittany Newberry totaled 20 digs.

For the weekend, Jones led the Lakers in kills with 34, averaging 3.09 kills per game.

The Lakers begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday at Northern Michigan.
