LSSU opens GLIAC play with U.P. swing

MARQUETTE - The Lake Superior State volleyball team opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition with a three-set loss Friday at Northern Michigan.

The Lakers (0-1 GLIAC, 1-4 overall) continue their Upper Peninsula road trip with a 4 p.m. match Saturday at Michigan Tech.

Sara Hess totaled eight kills and Abby Shereda added six to lead LSSU. Brittany Newberry led in digs with 13, followed by Ali Jones with eight. Hess added two solo blocks and one block assist and served for 11.5 points. Setter Ashley Purvis totaled 17 assists.

Daniela Bezerra and Caryn VanBeckum totaled 12 kills each to pace NMU (1-0 GLIAC, 6-4 overall).
