Laker Women's Tennis Earn 6-1 Victory on Senior Day

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's tennis team (5-8, 3-2 GLIAC) secured an emphatic 6-1 victory over the visiting Panthers of Davenport (12-10, 1-5 GLIAC) on Saturday.

The Lakers battled early on, claiming hard-fought wins in all three doubles matches to secure the 1-0 advantage. Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia) and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) came away with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot, and Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia) and Trinity Ly (Brampton, Ont.) followed it up with a 7-5 victory of their own in the top matchup. Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) and Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Spain) would then complete the sweep of doubles play by closing out a 6-4 win in the No. 3 doubles match.

Whip wasted no time on her way to a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 1 singles match, and Brasier extended the lead to 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-2 performance at the No. 2 spot. Parodi would then clinch the match for her team with a 7-5, 6-2 showing of her own at the No. 4 singles position, and Ly came away with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot shortly thereafter. The Panthers were able to get on the board with a victory in the No. 6 match in a super-tiebreaker, despite a strong 6-4 second set from Oviedo, but with all eyes on the final remaining match of the day, the senior Fraile held strong through multiple tiebreakers to earn a hard-fought 7-6(4), 7-6(6) victory on Senior Day.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, April 19 when they travel to face Grand Valley State with the first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.
