Laker Women's Tennis Earn 4-3 Victory over Michigan Tech

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's tennis team (3-7, 1-1 GLIAC) earned their first conference win of the season with a 4-3 decision over the Michigan Tech Huskies (2-12, 0-2 GLIAC) on Saturday.

The Lakers doubles unit of Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia) and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) wasted no time on their way to a 6-1 victory in the No. 2 doubles match, but the Huskies countered by claiming the top doubles match. With the doubles point on the line, Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) and Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) gave everything they had, but the Huskies were ultimately able to narrowly escape with the 1-0 advantage in the match after a hard-fought 9-7 tiebreaker.

Whip tied up the match in singles play with a 6-4, 6-2 margin at the No. 2 singles spot, and Trinity Ly (Brampton, Ont.) put LSSU in front with a 6-4, 6-2 decision of her own in the No. 3 singles match. Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia) would then push the Huskies to the brink after shaking off dropping the second set on her way to a well earned 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 spot. The Huskies were able to respond by narrowly stealing away a win in the No. 4 singles match, but Fraile proved to be the hero. After dropping her opening set, she went on to take full control of the match for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win to clinch the overall victory for her team.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, April 5 when they travel to take on the No. 16 Wayne State Warriors with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
