Laker Women's Tennis Fall in 4-3 Heartbreaker to SVSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's tennis team (2-7, 0-1 GLIAC) narrowly fell by a score of 4-3 to the Saginaw Valley State (SVSU) Cardinals (6-6, 2-0 GLIAC) on Saturday.

The Cardinals were able to race ahead to an early advantage in doubles play, leading by margins of 5-0, 4-1, and 4-1 across the three matches, but the Lakers were able to rally and build back some momentum, winning their next two games in each match. However, the hole proved to be too big to overcome, as SVSU managed to take the early 1-0 lead in the match, but the pairing of Maddie Whip (Sydney, Australia) and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) pulled off the comeback at the No. 2 spot for a 6-4 victory to build some energy going into singles play.

Parodi wasted no time tying up the score at 1-1, racing to a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 singles match, but the Cardinals responded by besting Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia) in the battle of No. 1s despite Brasier pushing the first set to a narrow margin of 5-7. Trinity Ly (Brampton, Ont.) would then tie up the score once again, winning in straight sets by a score of 6-4, 6-2. SVSU once again took a slim lead overall after taking the No. 2 singles match despite a hard-fought battle from Whip to force a third set, but the score was knotted back up at 3-3 a few moments later behind a strong 6-2, 6-4 effort in the No. 5 spot from Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain).

With the match on the line, all eyes would then turn to Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) at the No. 6 spot. Oviedo rallied back from down 4-3 in her opening set to take the early advantage, but Saginaw Valley's Lydia Liong was able to pull off a rally of her own in the second set to force a decisive third set by way of a 7-2 tiebreaker. Both players would then go back and forth, battling their way to a 3-3 stalemate with both sides holding serve. However, the Cardinals were ultimately able to close out the match by a final score of 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.

The Lakers return to action when they host the Michigan Tech Huskies in the Arbuckle Student Activities Center on Saturday, March 30 with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
