Laker Women's Tennis Fall in Pair of Weekend Road Matches

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis program (1-4) fell to both the Walsh Cavaliers (3-3) and the Ashland Eagles (4-2) by respective scores of 5-2 and 4-3 over the weekend.

Walsh

The Cavaliers were able to get off to a quick start, sweeping doubles play despite a strong effort from Julia Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles, Spain) and Martina Oviedo (Cordoba, Argentina) who narrowly fell by a score of 7-5 at the No. 2 doubles position.

Marilou Cote (Levis, Quebec) got the Lakers on the board with a strong 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 singles match, and Tayla Brasier (Bathurst, Australia) earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 2 singles position to secure the second point of the day for the Lakers. However, Walsh was able to secure victories in the remaining four matches for the 5-2 win overall.

Ashland

Brasier and Valentina Parodi (Albissola Marina, Italy) picked up a 6-4 victory in the No. 1 doubles match to open things up for the Lakers. However, the Eagles were able to claim the remaining two doubles matches by a score of 6-3 in both spots to claim the early 1-0 advantage early on.

Cote wasted no time tying up the overall match score at 1-1 with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 performance in the top singles match, but the Eagles would take the No. 2 spot, retaking the lead overall. Parodi would then shake off dropping her opening set to take control of the No. 3 singles match to win it by a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-1, and Riley Gilman (Holt, Mich.) helped push the Eagles to the brink with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 6 singles position. However, the Eagles would claim victories over both Fraile and Oviedo in thrilling three-set matches, narrowly stealing the overall match by a final score of 4-3.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Feb. 24 when they travel to face Lewis with the first serve scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
