Women's Tennis Plays to a Perfect 7-0 Victory over SVSU in GLIAC Home Opener

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University women's tennis team earned a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win in a home match by a final score of 7-0 against the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals on Saturday, April 2 in the Student Activity Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 

In doubles play, the Lakers won all three matches to secure the doubles point.The team's top pair of Milena Baigorria and Nadege Koua won their match by a score of 6-1 while the No. 2 pair of Muskaan Ranjan and Maddie Whip posted a 6-2 win in their match. LSSU's third pair of Claudia Sole and Keegan Malpass clinched the Laker sweep in doubles play with a 6-1 win. 

Koua won the No. 1 singles match against SVSU's Sara Neves in two sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Freshman Maddie Whip, who played in her first GLIAC match at home, also won her match in two sets (6-0, 6-2). Baigorria secured the team's fourth point in the match to earn the conference win after posting a two-set win in the No. 3 match by scores of 6-0 and 6-2. 

The Lakers strong play continued in the final three singles matches as the home team clinched the final three points. Ranjan won the No. 4 singles match in two sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 while Sole also posted a two set win after recording 6-2 and 6-1 scores against her Cardinal opponent in the No. 5 singles match. Julia Fraile Raton capped off the Laker victory with a 7-5 win in the opening set of the No. 6 singles match and sealed the win with a 6-2 score in the second set. 

What's Next

Both the men's and women's teams will return to competition next weekend on the road against two GLIAC opponents. The Lakers will take on the Wayne State Warriors on Friday, April 8 and will match up against the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday, April 9.
