Preview: Laker Tennis Set to Open GLIAC Play this Weekend

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University Men's and Women's Tennis teams will begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this weekend as the teams are set to play Grand Valley State on Friday, March 25 and the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday, March 26. The Lakers will take on the GVSU Lakers at 9:00 a.m. at the Premier Athletic & Tennis Club in Allendale, Mich. and will close out the weekend against the Bulldogs on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at the FSU Racquet & Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. 

The Laker men's team has totaled a 3-6 record through the nonconference portion of the spring season. Most recently, the Lakers fell by a 4-3 final score to Barton College at the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C. on March 10. The team's No. 1 singles player, Juho Kantola, will be looked upon to lead his team to a strong start in conference play. Kantola, won his most recent match against Barton as well as the doubles match with his No. 1 partner, Harris Rehan. The Lakers No. 2 singles player, Xavier Vicent Navarro, also recorded a victory in singles play against Barton. 

Grand Valley is 8-3 on the year while the Ferris State Bulldogs hold a 9-2 overall record. The GVSU Lakers and the Bulldogs met last weekend to open GLIAC play and the Bulldogs posted a 6-1 win in the conference match. 

The Laker women's team returns to competition after a nonconference match last weekend against the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies, a Division I program. LSSU dropped the match by a 7-0 final score and holds a 3-5 record this season heading into GLIAC competition. Prior to the match against Oakland, the Lakers earned a 4-3 win over Barton College. No. 1 singles player Nadege Koua won her match in three sets while No. 5 Maddie Whip and No. Julia Fraile Raton both won their matches in two sets. 

The GVSU Lakers have totaled a 6-4 overall record this season and hold a 1-0 mark in GLIAC play after beating Ferris State 5-2 last weekend. The Bulldogs hold a 5-5 overall record this season and are 0-1 in conference play. 

After this weekend's matches, the Lakers women's team will return home for a single conference game against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, April 2. The match is set for a 10:00 a.m. start at the Student Activity Center in the Norris Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
