Women's Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Midwest Regionals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Midwest Regionals in Indianapolis, Ind. on Saturday, Sept. 18, Sunday, Sept. 19, and Monday, Sept. 20 at Center Grove High School and Center Grove North Middle School in Greenwood, Ind. 

In doubles competition, the Lakers were represented by Milena Baigorria and Maddie Whip in the Draw A bracket. Baigorria and Whip won their first match in the opening round of 32 by a score of 8-1 but fell in the round of 16 by a score of 8-0. 

The Lakers had three pairs compete in the Draw B bracket including Nadege Koua/Muskaan Ranjan, Claudia Sole/Keegan Malpass, and Riley Gilman/Julia Fraile Raton. Koua and Ranjan won their first match by a score of 8-1 to advance from the opening round of 16 to the quarterfinal round. The pair lost in the quarterfinals by a 8-2 score. Sole and Malpass won the first round by a score of 8-5 to move forward to the quarterfinals, where they posted an 8-5 victory. The Laker duo fell in the semifinals by a score of 8-3. The final pair of Gilman and Fraile Raton advanced to the quarterfinals after a walkover by their opponent and fell by an 8-3 mark in the second round. 

Koua and Baigorria represented the Lakers in Draw A of the singles competition. Koua won her opening match against Sina Skjelstad by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 to advance out of the first round of 64 opponents. Koua fell to Maria Solnyshkina in the round of 32 by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to be eliminated from the tournament. Baigorria dropped her match in the main tournament by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 to Findlay's Laiying Alvarado. With the defeat, Baigorria moved into the Draw A Consolation bracket. 

Baigorria advanced to the semifinal round after consecutive withdrawals from her opponents. In the semifinal round, Baigorria fell to Ksenia Eremina in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2 (10-3). 

Ranjan, Whip, and Sole participated in Draw B at the ITA Midwest Regionals. Ranjan won the opening round of 32 competitors by scores of 7-6 (3), and 6-0. In the following round, Ranjan fell by a score of 6-7 (3), 6-3 [10-7]. 

Whip, in her first competition at the collegiate level, won the opening round by back-to-back scores of 6-0 and advanced from the round of 16 following an injury walkover from her opponent. Sole won the first two rounds of the Draw B singles tournament by identical scores of 6-2, 4-6 [10-6] to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Whip and Sole were matched up against each other. Sole recorded the win by a score of 6-4, 3-2 after Whip retired due to an injury during the match. Sole fell in the semifinals by a score of 6-1, 4-6 [10-6].
