Preview: Women's Tennis To Play GLIAC Matches against Northwood and SVSU this Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State women's tennis team will return to competition this weekend as the team travels to Midland, Mich. to take on the Northwood University Timberwolves in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m. and follows with a GLIAC match against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Saturday, April 10 at 9:00 a.m. at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich. The women will play their third match in four days when the Lakers host the Wayne State Warriors on Monday, April 12 at 12:00 p..m. in the Student Activity Center in the Norris Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 

The women's tennis team has not played a match since Saturday, March 20 against the Davenport Panthers as COVID-19 protocols went into effect within the Laker tennis program. 

Through the first four matches of the season, the Lakers hold a 2-2 overall record and a 1-1 record in conference play. 

The Lakers are coming off a 6-1 win over Davenport as the team won the doubles point as the Lakers top two pairs won their sets and the third pair won by default, as the Panthers were playing with a shortened lineup. 

In singles play, the Lakers won five of the six matches. Koua, the Lakers top singles player, won in two sets (6-2, 6-3) to set the tone for a strong performance from the Lakers against Davenport. The Lakers only loss in singles play came by default as Muskaan Ranjan had to end her set early due to an injury. 

Lake Superior State's first opponent of the weekend will be the Northwood Timberwolves, who have compiled a 6-5 overall record through a busy spring schedule. Most recently, the Timberwolves posted a 5-2 win over the Purdue Northwest Pride on Saturday, April 3.

The Lakers will then take on the Saginaw Valley Cardinals in the team's second conference match-up of the weekend. The Cardinals have totaled a 2-7 overall record through the spring season with the team's most recent match ending in a 5-2 loss against the Pride of Purdue Northwest on Friday, April 2. 

On Monday afternoon, the Lakers will return home to play the Wayne State Warriors in the team's third match in four days. The Warriors have posted a 5-7 overall record through the spring season with Wayne State most recently playing to a 6-1 win over the Davenport Panthers on Friday, March 26.
