Laker Tennis Opens GLIAC Competition with Road Matches Against Purdue Northwest & Davenport

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams will begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this weekend as LSSU travels for matches against Purdue Northwest and Davenport University. The first match will be played against the Pride of Purdue Northwest on Friday, March 19 in Hammond, Ind. and the weekend will conclude on Saturday, March 20 against the Panthers in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The women's team will compete in a conference match-up for the first time since the fall of 2019 while the men's team hasn't competed against a GLIAC opponent in nearly two years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In his fifth season in the role with the Lakers, head coach Luke Ogren will look to guide both teams to a strong start in conference competition.

The men's team is coming off a hard-fought match against Tiffin on March 6 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. as the Lakers fell by a 4-3 final. The match was highlighted by singles wins by Juho Kantola and Xavier Vicent Navarro.

The Laker women's team has posted a 1-1 record through the early stages of the season as the squad opened the 2021 season with a 7-0 win over Lawrence Tech and fell by a 5-2 final to a tough Tiffin team on March 6 at home.

There will be no fans in attendance, due to GLIAC rules.
