Lakers Drop Close Match to Ashland, 4-3

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team lost a closely contested meeting against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Ashland University by a score of 4-3 on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Ashland, Ohio. With the defeat, the Lakers drop to 0-3 in conference play this year. 

Doubles play was very competitive but the Eagles managed to edge the Lakers to receive the point. No. 1 pair of sophomore Nadege Koua and junior Muskaan Ranjan lost their set by a score of 7-5 and the Lakers No. 2 pair of junior AlexiAnn Drouin and sophomore Keegan Malpass lost in a tiebreaker 7-6 (3). 

The Lakers responded with strong play in their singles matches. In the first spot for LSSU, Drouin defeated her opponent in two sets, each by a score of 6-0. Koua won her singles match for the second day in a row as she posted scores of 6-3 and 7-6. Ranjan, a transfer to Lake State, notched her first singles victory as a Laker, with a two set victory (6-3, 6-3) in the No. 3 spot. 

After falling behind in the first set, Malpass won the second game by a score of 6-2. Malpass' comeback fell short, as she lost in the tiebreaker, 6-1. 

Despite losses in their doubles match and  singles play, freshmen Riley Gilman and Madelin Harrod continued to gain experience in their first collegiate season of play.

The Lakers will return to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to play a pair of home matches next weekend against Saginaw Valley on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Northwood on Sunday, Oct. 6.
