SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Lake Superior women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Michigan Tech on Saturday, Sept. 14. Since it was the team's first match of the season, the Lakers record falls to 0-1.

Lake State opened the morning with doubles play as No. 1 junior AlexiAnn Drouin and junior transfer Milena Baigorria defeated the Huskies pair of Ivona Gorgioski and Jessica Brown by a score of 6-2. In the No. 2 spot, sophomores Nadege Koua and Keegan Malpass lost 6-3.

In singles play, No. 1 AlexiAnn Drouin continued her strong play as she won (6-4, 6-3). The No. 2 spot athlete, Nadege Koua, lost in a close three set match by a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Junior Milena Baigorria lost in a retirement as she left her match due to an injury and was unable to return to play. No. 4 Keegan Malpass lost in a three set battle, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Freshman Riley Gilman played in the No. 5 spot and lost 6-2, 6-3.

Due to only having five active players, the Lakers lost the No. 3 doubles competition and the No. 6 singles competition by default.

The Lakers will travel to Caledonia, Mich. next weekend (Sept. 20-22) to compete in the ITA Regionals, at Davenport University. The women's opponent and start times are still to be determined.
