Women’s Tennis Defeats West Virginia Wesleyan 6-1, Men’s Tennis Falls

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. — The Lake Superior State men's and women's tennis teams faced West Virginia Wesleyan College on Thursday in nonconference action, with the men falling 7-0 and the women picking up a 6-1 victory.

In the women's doubles action, the Lakers picked up the point with a win coming from senior Tara Harvey and freshman Nadege Koua at the No. 1 spot, 6-4. At No. 2, sophomore AlexiAnn Drouin and freshman Keegan Malpass won 7-5. Allison Grandfield and Kirsten Malpass, both seniors, fell 4-6.

At No. 1 singles, Drouin won 6-0, 6-2. Koua, at No. 2, won 6-3, 6-3. Harvey won at No. 3 6-4, 6-0. Keegan Malpass won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4, while Kirsten Malpass fell 5-7, 3-6 at No. 5, and Grandfield won 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-4 at the No. 6 spot.

At men's doubles, the No. 1 pairing of freshman Ali Sahibzada and junior Joe Gilman fell 4-6. Sophomore Diego Penz and senior Luis Valerrama fell at No. 2, 2-6. In the No. 3 spot, freshmen Harris Irfan ul Haq and Krishan Taneja lost 3-6.

At No. 1 singles, Gilman fell 6-7(1), 1-6. Sahibzada, at No. 2, fell 2-6, 2-6 and Taneja, at No. 3, fell 4-6, 0-6. In the No. 4 spot, Valderrama fell 2-6, 0-6. Penz, at No. 5, fell 4-6, 2-6. Irfan ul Haq fell at No. 6, 1-6, 4-6.

The Lakers continue nonconference road action on Saturday when they face Lawrence Tech. They begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on March 22 when they visit Northwood and then head home for matches against Grand Valley State on March 23 and Ferris State on March 24. Home matches begin at 10 a.m. EST in the Arbuckle Student Activity Center and are free of charge.
