Huskies come from behind to upend the Lakers, 5-4

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- Lake Superior State women's tennis closed their fall Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season with a 5-4 loss at home against Upper Peninsula rivals Michigan Tech.

The Lakers (4-8, 3-8 GLIAC) opened the match by sweeping the doubles portion. Tara Harvey and Jenay Andrews earned and 8-3 victory in No. 1 doubles and Macarena Bielsa teamed with Laura Fernandez for a dominating, 8-1 performance in the second doubles match.

In the third doubles match senior Laura Roberts and sophomore Allison Grandfield came from behind for an 8-6 victory after trailing 3-2 and 5-4 earlier in the match. Roberts and Grandfield gave LSSU a 3-0 lead heading into the singles portion.

In singles play, Tech (6-5, 6-5 GLIAC) opened with a pair of victories in the first and second singles slots to close the gap to 3-2. Kwang Suthijindawong topped Tara Harvey 6-1, 6-0 and Paola Quintana defeated Laura Roberts 6-2, 7-5.

Macarena Bielsa claimed the Lakers' only singles victory in the third slot, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Sandra Cvetanovic to put LSSU ahead 4-3. Bielsa's victory would be the last for the Lakers as the Huskies finished with wins in each of the final three singles slots.

Junior Laura Fernandez  came close to giving the Lakers their fifth point and the match victory, but ultimately fell in three sets during No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-4.

The loss ends the Lakers' fall GLIAC season with a ninth-place finish in the conference, one loss short of Hillsdale in eighth. The top eight teams advance to the 2016 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament: Oct. 28-30, 2016 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
