Women's tennis splits doubleheader at home

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State women's tennis split a pair of home matches Saturday (Oct. 1) at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center. After falling 9-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tilt with Saginaw Valley in the morning, the Lakers (3-3, 2-3 GLIAC) bounced back to claim an 8-1 victory over NCAA Division III St. Norbert College in the afternoon.

Against the Green Knights (7-5) in the afternoon match the Lakers received victories from Tara Harvey and Jenay Andrews in No. 1 doubles (8-3) and an 8-6 victory from Laura Fernandez and Macarena Bielsa in the No. 2 slot. SNC claimed their only point with an 8-5 from Anna Gosz and Ashley Randazzo over Allison Grandfield and Laura Roberts.

LSSU sweeped the singles portion against the Green Knights to claim the nonconference victory. In No. 4 singles Fernandez bounced back from a 5-7 loss in the first set to win 6-2 and 12-10 in the final three sets.

The No. 5 singles position also needed three sets to determine a winner as Jenay Andrews claimed a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 victory for the Lakers.

The Lakers close the weekend homestand on Sunday with a 10 a.m. match against Northwood. Admission to all LSSU tennis events is free.
