Lakers break out in singles portion, defeat Spring Arbor 6-3

SPRING ARBOR, Mich.- Lake Superior State women's tennis rebounded from a 2-1 deficit in doubles to claim five singles victories en route to a 6-3 win over Spring Arbor on Wednesday at the Cougar Tennis Courts. The team win caps the season on a high note for the Lakers as they strung together their first three team-victories of the season during the month of March to end the season 3-12 overall.

Spring Arbor held court in the opening doubles portion with wins from Quincy Banini and Monika Wynne over Sarah Awe and Tara Harvey in No. 1 singles, followed by an 8-5 victory by Mary-Kate McShane and Emily Joseph over Laura Roberts and Jenay Andrews

The Lakers bounced back in No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 victory by Kirsten Malpass and Laura Fernandez over Alyssa Bart and Jewell Allen. For the freshman Malpass and sophomore Fernandez, it was their second combined doubles victory in their three matches during March. 

Despite trailing after doubles, the Lakers picked up five victories in singles play to capture the overall match win 6-3. Awe, a senior, concluded her career with a tight 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 conquest over Banini. Awe finished with a 39-38 career mark in singles and totaled 75 combined wins for her career.

Harvey improved her freshman singles mark to 6-9 overall with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over McShane in No. 2 singles. The win by Harvey brought the match even at 2-2.

After Wynne defeated Roberts in No. 3 singles, the Lakers swept the final three singles slots with wins in straight sets. Fernandez, Andrews and Malpass each earned their third singles wins of the season during the final three matchups.

The Lakers concluded the season 3-12 overall in team play and held a 31-59 record during singles play, highlighted by Awe's 8-7 record. In doubles the Lakers went 11-34 as Awe and Harvey combined for the most doubles wins with a 3-6 mark.
