Women's tennis wins big at Alma

ALMA, Mich. - Lake Superior State women's tennis joined the men's team for a road match against NCAA Division III Alma College on Friday and came away with a resounding 9-0 victory in the process. The victory was the first of the season for the Lakers (1-12).

Sarah Awe combined with partner Tara Harvey to deliver the first win of the doubles portion 8-1, followed by teammates Laura Roberts and Jenay Andrews combining for the 8-5 victory in No. 2 doubles victory and an 8-3 win by Laura Fernandez and Kirsten Malpass in No. 3 doubles helped the Lakers earn the sweep.

Awe led off with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Megan Solano in No. 1 singles for her team-leading sixth win in singles play on the year. Harvey followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nikki Malekadeli in No. 2 singles. Roberts also took care of her opponent, Paige Pontious, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.

Fernandez earned her first victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Claudia Barajas in No. 4 singles.

Jenay Andrews and Kristen Malpass closed out the match with victories in No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively. The singles wins for Andrews and Malpass were the first of their careers at LSSU.

The Lakers next travel to Lawrence University on March 25.
